Studio Diary – Recording of ‘Riot’

Man with Newspaper that is on fire with 'band and community updates' text

After many rescheduled dates we were finally able to get into the studio to record the first part of Memory Files. We thought we’d share our experience with you so we wrote this blog post/diary so you can get a feel of what the experience was like for us.

30th April 2021

Day one got off to a bit of a crazy start as our Bassist Johnny accidentally overslept a little bit.
When we left Carlisle a little bit later than originally planned we made it halfway on our journey to the studio before Jacob accidentally left his money at home meaning we found ourselves turning the van around back to Carlisle. Whoops!
Luckily our little delays didn’t put us too far behind schedule on day one but it certainly an eventful start to the first day. On day 1 one main focus was to make a good start on the Guide Tracks for both songs with our Drummer Matt.
Later on, in the day James, our “Band Mom” / Roadie joined us and we set off for a massive shop for food and then got cooking said food. After eating our Tea (food) we went live on Facebook to talk to you all about our day in the studio.

1st May 2021

Day 2 started with a nice and early 8 am wake-up call to allow the four of us to have two hours to get ready before Matt would finish off the Drums. Matt made lots of noise and managed to get finished for Lunchtime which then meant that it was Jacob’s turn to play Guitar.
After we’d finished in the studio we cooked our food, went Live on Facebook to talk to you all about our day in the studio, and then went on a walk together as the weather was nice.

2nd May 2021

On Day 3 we started with another “early” 8 am start but this time the reality that we were already on day 3 of recording started to hit us all; This meant that we had to work very hard to finish the Lead Guitar and get the Bass Guitar started and finished on the same day to allow us to have plenty of time for Vocals and any other changes on the final day.
Luckily, We were successful at recording them in time and we were so happy that we spontaneously celebrated by going to a restaurant in Newcastle called ‘Fat Hippo’.
We had some incredible Burgers and Beers there and then headed back to the studio just in time for our live session with you all on Facebook where we had some very interesting questions about music and food preferences and also went live with some of you.

3rd May 2021

The final day of recording very quickly crept upon us.
On Day 4 our Singer and Lead Guitar player Jacob had to get up nice and early so that he could do the vocal warmups that would allow him to not hurt himself when singing.
It is safe to say that his warm-up exercises woke and amused some of the group and we all wished him the best as he went off to record his vocals. Jacob had to be in the recording room alone due to the setup the studio provided for vocals but we did join him to sing one of the lyrics in ‘Riot’ and joined him when the audio was being played back so that we could contribute our thoughts as a group.
After the band heard a raw mix of the vocals and instruments we had recorded over the 4 days we were all happy and called it a wrap.

After calling it a wrap on the recording we ordered some Pizzas and celebrated with a game of Uno that James kept losing (more than once). We then had a few celebratory beverages and went live on Facebook to talk to everyone about our experience with the recording process and then went to sleep as it had been a long day.

4th May 2021 Onwards

Although day 4 was the final day in the studio we did have one last morning together which mostly consisted of cleaning, packing down all the musical equipment, and packed the van before we headed on the road back to Carlisle.

Since our time in the Studio
Now that the recording is finished we just need to wait to hear the first version of the songs after they’ve been Mixed and Mastered by George.
We’re very excited to hear those songs again after hearing the raw audio and we’re even more excited to share with you all the final versions of both ‘Riot’ and ‘Drowning’ in July 2021.

PR and Press should contact us directly for quotes/information regarding any upcoming releases and this experience. The Band had to go undergo covid-19 self-testing before, during, and upon return from the trip to the studio.
